Quite a Wordy Wednesday

The Cat
by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The cat
      licks its paw and
lies down in
     the bookshelf nook
                             She
                can lie in a
                            sphinx position
without moving for so
                               many hours
and then turn her head
                to me and
                         rise and stretch
and turn
              her back to me and
lick her paw again as if
                          no real time had passed
It hasn't
and she is the sphinx with
all the time in the world
in the desert of her time
The cat
    knows where flies die
sees ghosts in motes of air
              and shadows in sunbeams
She hears
the music of the spheres and
the hum in the wires of houses
and the hum of the universe
in interstellar spaces
                                       but
                    prefers domestic places
and the hum of the heater

Lazing on a Sunny Sunday Afternoon

And I love to live so pleasantly,
Live this life of luxury,
or, perhaps if your taste runs to Freddy Mercury rather than the Kinks . . .
Me? Well, I'm going back to sleep in a minute.

The Great Escape

Ut-oh.
I spy Nasty Nikon.

If I look away, maybe I can make it disappear.

Nope, that never works. Off to find a new beddy.

Sigh.

Flashback Friday: Further Archaeological Activities

So the Human found this in her drawer of Things from Long Ago. Who knew her very own quiet little Mama actually wrote the letter that produced this response from her very own congressman? Well, actually, the Human *did* know that her sweet Mommy used a lot of HBO words about our 37th president.  Just for the record, Congressman Moss did not have me on his official stationery, but I think I improve it, don't you?

TBT: At the Movies

The Human came across this in an archaeological dig through a drawer she rarely visits. Evidently her mother, who would have been 18 at the time, deemed it worth saving and apparently the Human has been too l-a-z-y to clean out a random drawer full of junk treasures.

Postage was a penny, & the movie 30 cents for adults and a dime for kids. Of course, the average hourly wage was about 50 cents in 1936, so it took about two hours to earn enough to take the family to the show.

Come to think of it, maybe not very different from now after all.

Meow.

Oh hello! It's how I keep my boyish figure, you know. Well, that and a regular diet of kitty grass so I can binge and purge when I have a little too much half&half.

Practicing My Footie Positions

Sweet Summer reminded us yesterday of the impawtance of paw-placement in achieving The Cute. Thus today, in the privacy* of my very own windowsill, I am working hard on perfecting my position in order to maximize my adorableness, thereby increasing my chances of extra brushies and more frequent playtimes.

Oh Spitty, Spitty!
Wherefore art thou Spitty?

What's Spitty? it is nor footie, nor paw,
Nor arm, nor tailio, nor any other part
Belonging to a ManCat. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call The Nip
By any other name would smell as divine;
So Spitty would, were he not Spitty call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!

The Human's Irish side:

Great-Grandmother Ellen (called Nan) and Great-Grandfather Joseph when they were just a young lad & lassie . . .

and Joseph (quite) a few years later (apparently auditioning for Eliza's father in My Fair Lady, MOL).

They don't seem to have had a cat. Pity.

A Visit with the Cousins

Hello, Kitties! You might remember little Aggie, Wally & Madie Mitten Kitten from back when they were just adorable kittens frolicking hither and yon in their Dad's house.

Well, Kitties, here they are today, all grown up and sadly entangled in their very own little Peyton Place.

Aggie the Beautiful, coldly cast aside by that big brash ManCat . . .

Wally, the Handsome Playboy who fell under the spell of  . . .

that chubby Siren, multi-toed Lolita & happy home-
wrecker
extraordinaire, Madie Mitten Kitten.

Stay tuned for further adventures on The Young and the Restless.

Sorry--Did You Say Something to Me?

For a minute there, I thought I might be interested in what you had to say, but, the sun was warm, and I was sleepy, and frankly, you're boring.
I hope there'll be something good for dinner, though.

Becoming Drought-Resistant

After a coupla more winters without rain, the Humans will be doing this, too.
They'd best start practicing now.

So, Didja Miss Me?

Well, as you can see, I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaack
When I told the Human she might want to add a little variety to spice up the blog, who knew she would take my loyal readers on a trip down some wacky Memory Lane to the land before time began?
We are not amused.

How Do You Say Squee in Finnish?

Kitties! Can you even believe this? Yesterday when the Human riffled through our always-boring mail, something decidedly UNboring slipped out!
Punapippuri's Aiti visited these adorable little triplets in Ilomantsi, Finland(E) and she sent us a postcard through the Royal Mail (the Royal Mail, I say! That's the mail the QUEEN uses. Or not, maybe. Finland is not quite part of the Empire, is it? Huh. Well, you'll have to figure that out for yourselves).
You will note Aiti was so very excited she forgot the 'm' in from, MOL! Humans really do lose it around us, don't they? Especially when we are still babies.
We are most grateful to Aiti (and His Royal Highness Punapippuri, of course) for this communique from Ilomantsi. It will soon have pride of place on our fine refrigerator, where upon reside all impawtant official documents.

Lost in the Mists of Time

Good afternoon, Kitties. Or maybe it's evening. I mean, who can even tell anymore? In any event, it occurs to me that you might possibly be getting tired of picture after picture of Yours Truly (yes, yes, I know: Who could tire of the King?)
Still, in going through some pictures earlier, we happened upon two from that fabulous decade, the 1970s (or as I call it, Before Time Began).
The Human had a wonderful tabby cat named BooBoo after the J.D. Salinger character (1970-1989), and she also shepherded a group of students to Washington, D.C. where they lucked into a meeting with that nice, newly-elected Jimmy Carter.*
See if you can pick out who is who:
* Disclaimer: The nice lady with the President is not my Human. Even at birth, she was never as slender as that lady, MOL!

Does My Butt Look Big to You?

To tell you the troof, Kitties, I don't really care if it does,
since I am already too busy fretting over the loss of my hour tonight.

FraturdayFraturdayFraturdayFraturdayFraturday!

One of the Human's favorite students who is now a senior in college (eek) coined a word that became popular with her classmates. It described that magical time between 3:05 p.m. Friday, when the last bell of the schoolday finally rang, and the luxurious, unalarmed wake-up of Saturday morning. Myself, I think it's a pretty cool word.
